About the lecture: Many children come to school using language varieties that differ significantly from the language of the classroom, and of text. Whereas we understand the potential impact of this variation when it occurs across languages, within language variation, regional or cultural varieties of American English are less well understood and are often undervalued. Our response to the varieties that children bring with them to school from their homes and communities can have a significant, positive impact on the development of language-based skills such as reading and writing. Dr. Washington will discuss the importance of affirming and uplifting the language of African American children who are developing readers.
